He played high school baseball before turning pro, and the Seattle Mariners selected him in the forty-fifth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He chose to enroll at Oregon State University, where he played baseball for the Beavers, rather than signing with the Mariners. In his first year of college, he participated as a placekicker.
